May 1883 - "Either on Childers of Coon Creek, as many rural families did in those days, they would save up their dirty clothes for several days or a week and then go to the creek and wash them on the bank.Virginia had sent Lillie (then 17 1/2 years and beautiful in body but retarded in mind), Daisy and I don't know who else (just kids) to the creek to wash and when they returned to the house Virginia saw that something was wrong with Lillie.
After questioning the younger girls said, "Heck did it, Heck McMillin: he got Lillie.
I am told that W.T. Mason was so upset that most folks thought he would kill Heck, but I understand he ran him out of the country.

W.T. and Virginia Mason took in Lester as if he was their own child and raised them after Lillie Smith, daughter of Virginia and her first husband died in childbirth.

Claude Mason was a result of James Lawrence Smith and his half sister Daisy Mason getting carried away as teenagers. They were never married and William and Virginia Mason took Claude into their home as their own child. Daisy went on to marry Andrew Evans. Claude went on to Garza Co. and worked and lived near Lester Mason until his death in 1934. His wife and children then went to live with Lester Mason and his family.
