Nell Conover - Brownsville Herald, The (Nov/1/2003)
Services for Nell Conover, 95, of Kerrville, will be conducted Saturday, October 25, 2003, at 2 p.m. in the United Presbyterian Church in Cleburne. Mrs. Conover passed away on Tuesday, October 21, 2003. She died peacefully in her home surrounded by loved ones.
Nell was born in Dallas, Texas, on March 31, 1908. Her mother was Eleanor Bassett Orr of Brenham, whose father was among the towns earliest settlers. Her father was John Orr, who came to Texas from Iowa at the age of nine and became a prominent leader in Texas agricultural community, serving as the first President of the Texas Farm Bureau Cotton Association.
Nell was preceded in death by her husband of 69 years, Brooks William Conover. They met while attending North Dallas High School, dated throughout college, and married on October 11, 1930, after her graduation from the College of Industrial Arts (now TWU) in Denton and his graduation from Texas A&M University in College Station. He was the love of her life.
Nell and Brooks lived in many Texas towns during their life together while Brooks was coaching high school football. They ultimately made their home in Cleburne, Texas. They considered the young men who played football for Brooks as extended family and always remained close to them. Nell was a public school librarian and worked at the County School in Joshua and Grandview, Crockett Jr. High in Irving, Irving High School, and finally, until her retirement at the age of 83, at Rio Vista Public School.
Nell was a vibrant and dynamic life force, who loved to dance, enjoyed all sports, was an active member of the Presbyterian Church throughout her life, was active in the Republican Party, and always loved a good joke. She adored her family and friends and dogs.
Nell was also preceded in death by her brother Bassett Orr of Bryan and her sisters Catherine Kurten of Bryan and Gylma Bogart of Celt, Missouri. She is survived by her son Brooks William (Mary) Conover, Jr. of McAllen, and her daughter Patty Whiteside of Kerrville. She leaves behind five grandchildren: Brooks William Conover III of Cleburne, Carol (Pat) Conover McCord of Round Rock, Gordon Conover of Houston, Josh Whiteside of Arvada, Colorado, and Star Sewell of Kerrville.
