Samuel MINNICK [Parents] [scrapbook] 1 was born 1780/1790 in TN. He died 1831 in Rhea Co, TN. Samuel married Elizabeth BARNETT.
Hi Julie,
You don’t know me, but we share an ancestor. I believe I can help you clear up a brick wall. Sarah Elizabeth Davis (daughter of Mary Emaline Kennedy) was my ggggrandmother.Mary Emaline Minnick was born in Rhea County Jan 22, 1828. Her father was Samuel Minnick. There is a LOT of wrong information about this family on the web. I have spent lots of time in the State Archives in Nashville and feel confident that she was Samuel Minnick’s daughter. I have even been in the basement of the Rhea County courthouse. I can tell you have done a lot of research too. I loved your website and I’m envious of all the old pictures you have.
Mary Emaline’s mother died prior to the 1830 census (have not confirmed for sure who she was, but the web says it was Elizabeth Barnett)
Samuel Minnick died about 1831 in Rhea County, TN. His will was probated Feb 1832. The inventory and sale of the estate took place Nov 28, 1831. He left nine orphans. Rhea county court documents are full of who took these children in and when they received their share of the estate as they reached legal age.
Mary Emaline and her sister Sarah Adeline were taken in by Lewis R Collins on Nov 5, 1832. Somewhere along the line the girls went to James A.Darwin. The court records of March 5, 1844 have James Darwin giving the girls to Peter Minnick (probably their oldest brother) with their share of their father’s estate, which was $307.17. Mary Emaline Davis received her share of the estate in Nov 1848 from Peter, it was paid to Ganium Davis.
Mary Emaline Minnick married Ganium Davis in Rhea County, Sept 30, 1847
Their only surviving child was Sarah Elizabeth Davis, born Nov 24, 1848. I can not find this family in the 1850 census, but have wondered about the same Thomas Davis family that you have, everything fits except for the first name. This also explains who the 12 year Sarah was in the 1860 Kennedy family.
Elizabeth Davis married James Wright after the Civil War. In her 1907 Guion Miller application, she stated that her father died when she was too young to remember.
I hope this helps. Oh one more thing. Darius Kennedy died 1936 and is buried in Boyd Cemetery in Carroll County, Arkansas (the same little cemetery where his uncle Samuel Minnick (1825-1908) is buried, (Mary Emaline’s brother) Which probably what took Darius to Arkansas in 1901 (he rec’d a homestead of 80 acres) in the first place.
Hope this helps,
Lisa Williams

(Neither Samuel or Peter had a wife living in 1830!)
From Lisa Williams:
Samuel's will was probated in Rhea County, Tennessee, February 1832. The inventory and sale of his estate took place on Monday, November 28, 1831. The total amount of the estate sale was $843.00. Peter Minnick bought several pieces of farm equipment and a saddle. John Minnick, who was probably another brother, bought a Bible and Testament for 43 3/4 cents and a saddle.
There were several different guardians appointed for the children. On November 11, 1831, William Moore was given Peter, John, and Henry. Mumford Smith took these three young men on May 5, 1834.
Jackson Howerton, on February 7, 1832, was given guardianship of Martha (aka Patsy), Samuel, Isaac, and William. Guardianship of these four children transferred to James A Darwin on August 1, 1836. On that same day, Isaac was "bound" to Micajah Howerton. On March 5, 1838. Samuel was bound to Mumford Smith, and William was bound to Hewlett Smith.
The two youngest girls, Sarah Adaline and Mary Emaline, were taken in by Lewis R Collins on November 5, 1832. Somewhere along the line the girls went to James A Darwin. The court records of March 5, 1844 have James Darwin giving the girls to Peter Minnick (probably their older brother) with their share of their father's estate, which was $307.17. Mary Emaline and her huband, Gainum Davis, received her share of the estate in September of 1848 from Peter.Fischer & Burns (1989), Tennessee Tidbits, 1778-1914, Vol. III.
p. 261. 5-May-1834. Mumford Smith appointed guardian of Peter, John & Henry Minnick, minor heirs of Samuel Minnick, dec. (Rhea Co., TN).

Elizabeth BARNETT [Parents] was born about 1800 in TN. She died before 1830. Elizabeth married Samuel MINNICK.

SAMUEL MINNICK ELIZABETH ALMORODE 16 March 1802 Augusta
They had the following children:
F i Mary Emaline "Twin" MINNICK was born 22 Jan 1828 and died 3 Mar 1907. M ii Peter MINNICK was born 1816 and died 1881/1882. F iii Unknown Female MINNICK was born 1815/1820. She died Unknown.
There is a female shown in the household with Samuel Minnick in 1830 as age 15-20, meaning that she was born between 1815 and 1820. If she lived, there is another female out there who must have married by 1831 making her possibly 16 at the time of her father's death OR she died before Samuel died.M iv John MINNICK was born 1820 and died 1870/1880. F v Martha (Patsy) MINNICK was born 1821 and died before 1880. M vi Samuel MINNICK was born 5 Jul 1825 and died 22 Feb 1908. M vii Isaac Newton MINNICK was born 12 May 1826 and died 20 Nov 1882. M viii Henry Mathias MINNICK was born 1827 and died 1870. F ix Sarah Adeline "Twin" MINNICK was born 1828 and died 1896. M x William Mathias MINNICK was born 23 Jan 1829 and died 4 Aug 1903.
Ganium/Ganum DAVIS 1 was born about 1828. He died 1851/1855 in TN. Ganium/Ganum married Mary Emaline "Twin" MINNICK on 30 Sep 1847 in Rhea Co, TN.
Living in Marshall Co. TN in 1850 in District 4 besides Ganum and wife Mary are Thomas Davis born 1787 age 63 and wife Elizabeth born 1796 age 54 along with Polly born 1808 (deaf and dumb) age 42, Cisily born 1831, Louisa born 1833 and Giles born 1835 or 1836. This all fits leaving 1 male born 1830-35 and 2 males born 1825-1830 unaccounted for. Is there a connection? Could Ganum be one of the missing 1825-1830 males?
Ganum is in household 671 and Thomas is in household 691.
In the 1840 Rhea Co. census there is a Thomas Davis age 50 to 60 (1780-1790), with 2 males 5-10 (1830-1835), 2 males 10-15 (1825-1830) and one male 15-20 (1820-1825), 2 females 5-10(1830-1835), 1 female 30-40 (1800-1810) and 1 female 40-50 (1790-1800)
The 1840 census seems to fit the ages for the 1850 census.
Mary Emaline "Twin" MINNICK [Parents] [scrapbook] was born 1 22 Jan 1828 in Rhea Co, TN. She died 3 Mar 1907 in Dayton, Rhea Co., TN and was buried in Concord Cemetery Evansville, TN. Mary married Ganium/Ganum DAVIS on 30 Sep 1847 in Rhea Co, TN.

Ganum Davis 22 TN
Mary E. 22 TN
Sarah E. 1 TNHow did they get from Rhea Co. to Marshall Co. and back to Rhea? Did Ganum die in Marshall Co. leaving Mary all alone? Or did they make it back to Rhea Co. before he died? He is not listed in the 1850 Mortality Schedule for Marshall Co. so he died between 1851 and 1855.
2 doors down from Daniel and Mary Emaline in the 1870 Rhea Co. census is Andrew J. Smith 45 and wife Mary 42. Who are they? They named a daughter Isabella 11, and sons Daniel 10 and John N. 8. Could they somehow be related to the Kennedys?
