From J.K. Street Civil War Letters to his wife Melinda Elizabeth Pace, he writes:

Sat Feb 15th, 1862 - Ninnie, I can't tell you how much surprised I was to-day. I went down to mail Uncle Mcs* letter this morning and the P.M. Mr. Settle knew him and several other gentlemen in the office knew him, they remarked that every body thro' here knew McDougal and Cion Pace. I made inquiry about where grandmother** lived, and found that I was in a 11 miles of her place, I went right straight and got a furlough and went to see her. I borrowed a horse from the comissary department. Grandmother was down at Uncle Alberts and Uncle D and family had gone to Mr. Tankesely's, so no one at home. I went back to next house and got directions to Uncle Abners about  mile from Grandmothers, he lives north Uncle Whits wife, he has his 3rd wife and four children. He was very much surprised to see me, treated me just as cleverly as possible. Sunday Feb 16th - went up after breakfast to Grandmothers, Uncle D had come home - after dinner he and I went down to Uncle Alberts (8 miles). Grandmother has had a bad spell of pneumonia but is now in a manner well. O dear you never saw such a surprised set of folks in your life - all glad to see me - had a great many questions to ask which I haven't room to write. Uncle Albert wrote to Uncle Cion this evening and I wrote some to Uncle Cion in his letter.

*Uncle Mc is Archibald Campbell McDougal married to Margaret (Kitty) East, sister to Martha and Susan East who married Cion and Ruel Pace.
See Melinda Elizabeth Pace Street to see an obituary that her husband J.K. wrote.
**Grandmother that J.K. refers to would be Melinda Elizabeth Pace Streets grandmother Elizabeth Rose Pace wife of David Walker Pace.

From J.K. Street Civil War letters - Sat. Mar. 22 1862
I hired a two horse vehicle and brought him out to Grand Ma's to-day to have him buried in her family grave yard. I could not bear the idea of burying him among strangers. I met Grand Ma just above the barn going down to see Uncle Whit's wife - she had heard that bro was sick - immediately she asked how he was. I was so full I could only point to the coffin and say "he's dead" - it seemed to hurt her almost as had as if it had been one of her own children, said she was glad I had brought bro to her house to bury him - said she was sorry he had not been brought to her house when he was first taken sick. If I had known he was going to be bad sick I never would have gone to the hospital - but wisely the future is hid from us. Altho' we have the best of physicians in our Brigade hospital, yet from some corse there is scarcely a man ever gets well who is bad sick there. Sunday March 23rd - We buried bro to-day - buried him at the head of grand Pa Pace's head - there stands a butiful fine bush at his foot and a red oak at his head.

This proves that William Kennedy and David W. Pace Sr. are buried in this cemetery.

Oct. 10, 1862 - . I was in the 32 Miss Regt this morning it sustained a heavy loss. Uncle D was shot in the left hip - prety badly wounded. I saw the wound it is a flesh wound - is not dangerous - he walked off the battle field without help.
Dec. 17, 1862 - Dear I have sad news to write; you remember I wrote you after the battle of Perrysville that Uncle D was wounded in that fight, in the hip; Uncle Scion brings word that he has since died - took cold in the wound. When I saw Uncle D I thought that he would soon be well - his wound was only a flesh wound but alas! it proved fatal.

I am sure that David's brothers made sure that he was brought home to be buried.

COMMENTS: Additional info on Edmund Pace and family from Bruce A. Howard, A SKETCH and HISTORY of OUR COLONIAL ANCESTORS FROM 1619 to 1799 (Quitman, MS: Specialty Publishing & Printing, 1998), pp. 244-252. Edmunds father, John, presumably moved from Edgecombe Co, NC to Surry Co in 1772 - if this is correct, Edmund would have been born in Edgecombe rather than Surry Co. Middle name, "Marion", appears to be accepted by most descendants, but source remains unclear and may not be correct.

BIOGRAPHY: Carrie Pace Letter:

Mr. Jesse B. Payne, PSAB (from PSAB-118 p. 12.)
Dear Sir:
I have learned that you are related to the Pace family of North Carolina. I hope you have a family tree.  I think everyone should have.  I grieve deeply that I have not.  My grandfather was born in Warren Co, NC about the year 1800.  I can remember him.  He lived to be very old.  The oldest record I have is this - "Edmund, son of John Pace, born Feb 24, 1764."  This was my great grandfather.  He married "Sarah, daughter of John Walker, born Aug 1766. [Pace Family 1607 - 1750 shows his name as David Walker]  I have learned that Edmund Pace had a brother John and a brother Dempsey.  There were probably other brothers of whom I never heard.  These three, Edmund, John and Dempsey  moved first to Tennessee and then to Ala. where they died.  Edmund Pace was a Baptist preacher.  I know very little of his children, except my own grandfather, Edwin Pace, who was also a Baptist preacher.  Edmund Pace's sons were:
1.  William Thomas, 2. John who married Miss Pigg in Tenn., 3. Dempsey who married Miss Hunt in Ala., 4.  Alsa R. who married Rhoda Jarvis in Tenn., 5.  Rich of whom I know nothing., 6.  A son whose name I've failed to get, and 7.  Edwin A., my grandfather.
His daughters were:  Patsey who married Mr. Anderson, Sarah who married Mr. Haggard, Another who married Mr. harin ? (sp) Harris?, Another who married Mr. Hom, Another who married Mr. Jarvis, Another who married Mr. Murphy.
...The family came over in colonial days and settled in and around Danville, Virginia, in Pittsylvania Co, Virginia and in Warren Co, NC.
Miss Carrie Pace, General Delivery, Atlanta, GA.

Bill says Edmund died in Greene Co, AL in 1834 rather than Macon, Noxubee Co, MS
Last record of Edmund in Surry Co, NC was deed record on Sept 2, 1813, sold 4 tracts of land on Fisher River.  On Surry Co Tax List for last time in 1813.  On March 20, 1814 he purchased 67 acres on Hickory Creek in Warren Co, TN from David McDaniel.  On March 15, 1816 he bought 13 adjoining acres from James Forster.  In 1816 he bought another 120 acres (on Charles Creek) from Joseph Pryor.  In 1820 he sold 100 acres on Charles Creek to Abraham Jarvis.  He was in Greene Co, AL by 1830.

Death: 28 AUG 1834 in Noxubee County, Mississippi
Burial: Pace's Cemetery, Bailey, Lauderdale County, Mississippi information found on Internet with source from Cynthia Pace

According to Greene County Marriage Record AP-225, the Rev. Edmund Pace, Sr., was ordained on the third Saturday in September 1807 at a church on Little Fish River in Surray County, NC. In 1819 he organized a Baptist Church at Five Mile Creek, Akron, AL, which lies in what is now Hale County. He also organized other churches and performed marriages in Alabama from 1819 to 1833.

Mrs. M. F. Dickson, P.O. Box 767, Hattiesburg, MS, a descendant of Martha (Pace) Jarvis, daughter of Rev. Edmund Pace, Sr., searched the records in the courthouse in Macon, Noxubee, MS. She found in the minutes of the Probate Court that on 11 November 1834, ALSA PACE, son of Rev. Edmund Pace, Sr., applied for letters of administration of the estate of Edmund Pace, Sr., deceased, who died intestate. He furnished bond, and the bond was signed by himself, James Y. Anderson, and Silas M. Fain, both sons-in-law of Rev. Edmund Pace, Sr.

They had the following children:

M i David Walker PACE was born 20 Feb 1792 and died 8 Apr 1848.

F x Martha Patsy PACE was born about 1792 and died about 1865.
M xi Burwell PACE was born 1790 in Surry County, North Carolina. He died 1868.

This is a possibility of why Edmond Marion and Sarah Walker named their son Burwell.
"Carter's Grove in James City County, was built in the 1750s on land
purchased by Robert ("King") Carter for his daughter Elizabeth.  Her son Carter BURWELL built the house.  The property is maintained  by the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation, Inc."  [pp.178-79]

Several children of Bennett Rose (1732-1778) of Surry County, North Carolina, and their families, moved to White County, Tennessee, through Wilkes and Surry Counties, North Carolina, and Lee County, Virginia.  Susannah Rose (1768-1850) married Pierce Cody, son of Godfrey Cody, Tory, of Surry County, and relative of William Ridge, Tory, father of Capt. William Ridge Jr of White County, Tennessee.  John Rose (1770-1851) likely married Elizabeth Ridge,.one of the orphans of William Ridge, Tory.   Lucy Rose (c1755) married John Jarvis, son of Jabez and Elizabeth Jarvis of Surry County.  Abner Rose (1763-1841) married a daughter of Jabez and Elizabeth Jarvis. And Elizabeth Rose (c1760-Aft. 1820) married Reziah Jarvis, another son of Jabez and Elizabeth.

Kezia Rose is shown marring a Rhoda Critchfield 19 Nov 1805, Benjamin Rose bondsman

In Surry Co Court Minutes I found this :
Deed from Jabez Jarvis Jr to Abner Rose was proven by the oath of Reziah Jarvis and ordered to be registered.Dated 13 Feb 1798.

16 Aug 1798, A deed from Jabiz Jarvis and wife to Hezekiah Branson was proved in open court by the oath of Abner Rose and ordered to be registered.

Jabez Jarvis and Abner Rose were both landholders in Buncombe county, NC in the 1790s. Abner made a land entry on Flat Creek of the French Broad in 1792, received the grant in 1794, and sold the land to John Roberts in 1795. With that history, it seems possible that he never really lived in Buncombe, or only lived there for a short while. Later deeds for adjoining properties refer to his tract as "Rose's land" for many years thereafter, though.

Jabez Jarvis actually settled in Buncombe, on Big Ivy waters. The earliest Jarvis in Buncombe appears to be Jacob in 1797, followed by Jabez in 1798. There was an Abner Jarvis, whose first purchase was in 1817, and a "Rezi" much later. These dates are from the Buncombe County, North Carolina Index to Deeds, 1783-1850 by James E. Wooley. There may be earlier and additional traces of the Rose and Jarvis names in the Buncombe land grant records, not all of which made it into this index.

Sarah "Sally" LONDON  [Parents] was born about 1763 in Stafford County, Virginia. She died 1851 in Giles Co, Tennessee. Sarah married 1 Abner ROSE on 1805 in Surry County, NC.

Other marriages:
SUMMERS, Johnson

Although there has long been strong circumstantial evidence that the Surry Co. NC marriage between Abner Rose and Sally Summers was a second marriage for both, occurring in the 1808 period between Abner Rose and Sarah (London) Summers, widow of Johnson Summers, proof of that assertion has been lacking until now. Thanks to Jack London, that proof has been found in the Giles Co., TN, estate of Amos London Jr., brother of Sarah (London) Summers.

Extract of Document from Giles County Chancery Court 1830-1900

File Box L - 1, Case 1586 The Estate of Amos London, Jr, Deceased

Deposition of D. G. Bills at Marshall Co., Tennessee, 4 March 1861

D G Bills, aged about seventy years who answers and says - I knew Amos London late of Giles County, Tennessee for some fifty years before his death. I knew him first in North Carolina then in Tennessee. He never had any child or children born in wedlock and died leaving neither child or children or the representatives of such. He had one brother only, his name was John London who died in Marshall County, Tennessee. He left a good many children & among them was Sarah, who intermarried with Thomas Parks. They are both dead and have two living children, viz. John L and James M Park. One daughter of said Thomas and Sarah Park married Nicholas Tomblinson & she is dead and has left one child, I believe. Amos London had three sisters. One of them married Brice Jackson - Jackson & wife as I understand are both dead. They left some children, but the number I can not tell. One other of his sisters married a man by the name of Johnson Summers. He died and she married a man by the name of Abner Rose. They are both long since dead and she died without child or children or the representatives of such. The other of Amos' sisters married a man by the name of Palmer. As to Palmer and wife I speak principally from information and family reputation, but as to the children if any I can not speak from my own information but I am well satisfied that these four are the only brothers and sisters of the said Amos London and further this deponent says not.

D G Bills

Note: The London and Bills families were intermarried and moved together from Monmouth Co., New Jersey to Surry Co., North Carolina and then to Marshall and Giles Co., Tennessee.

Extracted by Jack London, 26 December 2003

A possible identity for Abner Rose's child-bearing wife would seem to be a daughter of Jabez Jarvis Sr. of Surry Co., NC. For a more complete examination of significant evidence linking Abner Rose to his potential siblings and half-siblings and to his potential parents Bennet/Bennett Rose and the widow Sarah (Bradford) Taylor, see the 1999 issues of Tennessee Ancestors (East Tennessee Historical Society), available in many good genealogy libraries around the country.

To my friends and acquaintances of Surry County –

I am in the 68th year of my age and the forepart of my life was agreeable and pleasant and as on did I live in my family with utmost content and satisfaction until about twenty years ago my old woman began to incur my displeasure and she together with her friends and children, to wit, my two sons and some of the BILLS has in hundreds of ways too tedious and too delicate to describe has impaired my feelings and fretted me to distraction. I am left without consort, I am reduced to almost poverty, and in particular abused and beaten by Amos, spit upon, frowned upon by him and his family and treated in the most ungrateful manner almost unheard of by a son to his father, so much repeated illusage that my poor old gray hairs are almost brought down with sorrow to the ground

I know my friends I am _____ and always was as all men are to human frailties from impulse of passion which has been in a great manner occasioned by the illtreatment of my two sons and their mother continually joining together to disturb my peace and happiness at home, and as my intentions were always for to support of my children by my industry and labor in a decent manner and receiving nothing in turn but abuse ridicule that would irritate any man of spirit this as I before mentioned being the desires of my heart such as the great and good will known to contribute to my familys welfare and not being received with kindness and tenderness that a father has a right to expect from his sons has made such a deep impression on my heart as to crave death rather than to live in a world where I no more expect any content, I therefore bid farewell to my aquaintences and in particular to my children and their mother with a request that Amos deliver to his sister Sally SUMMERS all my moveable effects, I shall endeavor to travel to some distant part where I hope  receive happiness in and thus a blessed return to Jesus Christ.

John PACE [Parents] was born about 1725 in Prince George Co, VA. He died 8 Oct 1780 in Surry County, North Carolina. John married Sarah BURGH.

Notes for John Pace:
Per Bruce Howard, in January 1760 he purchased about 200 acres from Thomas Hart in Edgecombe Co, NC, near Beaver Dam Swamp Creek.
Bruce says that John and his sons Thomas and Richmond died in the Revolutionary War abt. 1780.

Bruce shows their children as:  Dempsey, Thomas, William, Burwell, Stephen, Richmond, Amy, John, Edmund, Frederick and Richard.
See page 436-449.
Jim Pace, Jr. has 1732 for birth year.  Surry Co, NC for death place.
Jim's comments on John Pace: "John moved to Old Edgecombe Co, NC about 1760 with his brother Richard.  Upon Richard's death he sold the farm and moved to Surry Co, NC.  John and his two sons Thomas and Richmond were tories during the Rev War.  They were all killed in action although the exact date and location are unknown.  John was believed to have died at the battle of Shallow Ford with two of his sons on Oct 8, 1780.  This has not been proven although it is known that he served under Gideon Wright whose unit was involved in the battle.
Four of his other sons started the rumor that they were descendants of Frederick Pace from Wales.  This was done to conceal the fact that their father was loyal to the British.  The four brothers were William, John, Frederick and Edmund.  John's son Dempsey enlisted in the NC Continental Line and was killed while in service.  Burwell enlisted in the Patriot Army in 1776.  He was elected to rank of Sergeant in Col. John Henton's regiment."  This comes mostly from Bruce Howard.  Jonathan Pace questions the truth of much of this as he has not seen any significant documentation.

Proof of children of John Pace
The 1774 Surry Co tax list confirms RICHMOND as a son of John. The 1781 petition of Burwell Pace for reinstatement of confiscated land confirms BURWELL as a brother of Richmond and, therefore, another son of John. The Bible record of Alsa Pace (a son of Edmond) confirms EDMOND as a son of John.

The 1923 "Carrie Pace Letter", though not proof, names DEMPSEY and JOHN as two brothers of Edmond. If this letter is accurate, these are also sons of John.
Other "children" in Surry Co named by Bruce Howard quite possibly belong to John and Sarah, but I have seen no documentary proof  for them. They appear to be placed based upon their proximity to John (Sr) and Edmond Pace in Surry Co, NC and lesser circumstantial evidence.

Also to note is that the given names of Amy, Thomas, John, Richard, William,Fredrick, mentioned in will of Thomas Burgh are also repeated in the given names of John and Sarah Burgh Pace purported children. Also to note that Jesse Bonner, a witness to the will of Thomas Burgh. The given name of Jesse repeats as the purported son of Thomas Pace, s/o John and Sarah. Also, John s/o John and Sarah named a son Jesse. I believe this is some of the lesser circumstantial evidence referred to by Miles. John and Sarah Pace purportedly had 11 children...6 names of which occur in the Burgh family. Too much evidence to be ignored that Sarah Pace more than likely was indeed
the d/o Thomas Burgh.

April 17, 2008 - With results from the lines of two sons of Frederick Pace, we know the DNA results of Frederick Pace himself through the process known as triangulation.   There is no doubt remaining that Frederick Pace was not related to John Pace (the Tory).   Hopefully, we can put that speculation to rest now.

Sarah BURGH [Parents] died UNKNOWN. She married John PACE.

Notes for Sarah Burgh:
Sarah has been shown by the Pace Society as Sarah Pope.  There is no evidence for this. Nor is there any evidence that John's wife was truly named Sarah OR Burge!
Dates from Jim Pace, Jr. (JPace104@aol.com).

They had the following children:

M i Edmund Marion PACE was born 29 Feb 1764 and died 28 Aug 1834.
M ii Thomas PACE was born 24 Feb 1754 and died about 1780.
F iii Amy PACE was born about 1755 and died about 1832.
M iv Reuben PACE was born 1756. He died 1846 in Surry County, North Carolina.

Notes for Reuben Pace:
No wife or children mentioned in his will. Surry Co, NC Will Book 4/256, 1846.
On 1820 census index Surry Co, NC, p 734.

I am unsure if Reuben was son of John or not. There are so many different lists floating around of different children. I will leave Reuben here until I find out differently.
M v Stephen PACE was born about 1757 in Surry County, North Carolina and was christened after 1804 in NC.

Vena lived to be 100. She made the Bryan paper for nabbing a would be burgler by wiring up cans to her T.V. in her nursing home. The cans made noise, she screamed and the burglar was caught. She was in her late 90's at the time!

The love of her life Mac Loman died shortly after their marriage. She never remarried and she never had children. She became somewhat bitter after the death of Mac.
