Marvin `Don' Gilliam
Marvin Donald "Don" Gilliam went to be with the Lord on September 5, 2005. He was born on October 28, 1925 to Neal and Ola Mae Gilliam. He married Mary Frances Caddell on January 2, 1955. Don will be greatly missed by his family and many friends. He was a World War II veteran and served his country honorably in occupied Japan.Don resided in Bells on family land that has been continuously in the Gilliam family for over 100 years. He retired from Brookside Division of Safeway in the early `90s. Prior to working at Safeway, he was a heavy construction operator and owned the Gulf Filling Station in Bells. In addition he raised cattle and grew hay crops on the family farm.
He attended church at First United Methodist Church of Bells with his family, and was a member of Virginia Point Methodist Church. Don enjoyed playing "42" and dominos, traveling and spending time with his family and friends during his retirement. He loved horses and the country life of rural Texas.
Don is survived by his wife, Frances; daughter, Woodye Jo Mercer and her husband, Jack; sons, Barney Gilliam and John Gilliam of Bells; grandson and wife, Jason and Robyn Mercer of Holly Springs, North Carolina; grandson, Bradley Gilliam of Lewisville, Tiffany Gilliam of Sherman, Edie and Chris Howell of Durant, Oklahoma, John Mercer of Sherman, Texas and five great-grandchildren, Sydney Nicole, Christain, Colin, Courtlan and Johnathan; and sisters and husbands, Tommy and Chuck May of Phoenix, Arizona, Frances and Dick Huffman of Heath, Ohio, Bessie and Owen Jenkins of El Reno, Oklahoma and a number of nephews, nieces and cousins.
Funeral service will be at 3 p.m. Thursday, September 8, 2005, at Mullican Little Funeral Home. Masonic graveside services will by conducted by Bells Masonic Lodge #798 at Virginia Point Cemetery. Family visitation will be from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday evening. The family will be at the Gilliam farm at other times.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials in memory of Don Gilliam be given to the building fund of the First United Methodist Church of Bells, Texas, P.O. Box 155, Bells, Texas 75414.
