Thomas DulaneyThomas Dulaney is believed to be the son of Daniel Dulaney of Pendleton District, South Carolina and his wife, Priscilla White. His birth is estimated at about 1782 in S.C. and he died 13 December 1829 in Fayette County, Alabama, according to his widow's application for land based on his military service. (Family legend is that he was visiting relatives in St. Clair County, AL. and he and a son went hunting while there. He got down from his horse to open a gate and leaned his gun against the fence. The horse hit the gun, which discharged and wounded Thomas and he died shortly thereafter. He is said to be buried in a Martin-Dulaney cemetery in St. Clair County, AL. Several efforts have failed to locate such a cemetery, which was along the railroad not far from Bethel Church some miles out from Ashville. A Martin crossing on the railroad was located and a small family burial plot there had only one stone - that of a child.)
Thomas married in 1802 in Pendleton District, SC by Edmon Foster, JP. to Rhoda Thrasher, born 9 December 1783 in North or South Carolina, she died after 1860 in Mississippi and is buried at Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church Cemetery in Fulton, Itawamba County, MS. Rhoda was the daughter of Robert Thrasher and his wife Elizabeth whose maiden name is said to be Dulaney. Possibly Thomas and Rhoda were cousins but no proof has been found.
While positive proof has not been found that Thomas is the son of Daniel, there are several points of circumstantial evidence that indicate he is. Apparently there are no probate records on Daniel, which would furnish the proof. William C. Stewart in 1800 Census of Pendleton District, South Carolina (Special Publication No. 6 of the National Genealogical Society, 1963) indicates a connection between Daniel of Pendleton and the Dulaney's in 1830 census of Marion County, AL, which family was the widow and children of Thomas Dulaney. Census records indicate Daniel had a son about the right age for Thomas. In the 1880 census Thomas' son John indicated his father was born in SC. The fact that Rhoda Thrasher's father owned land on the Tugaloo River just across the river from Pendleton District tends to place Thomas in Pendleton District since bride and groom usually lived in the same neighborhood. John, son of Daniel, lived in Lincoln County, Tennessee at the same time Thomas did and often brothers migrated together or one went to join the other. Thomas, as well as the known sons of Daniel, lived very close together in Jefferson County, AL. The same given names are used among the various descendants.
Some of Thomas' descendants in Itawamba County, MS knew of a kinship to William Dulaney, son of Daniel, of Calhoun County, MS. Since Thomas died before known children of Daniel and his family moved somewhat away from the others. It is thought that little mention of him or his family would have been made so that William's grand daughter did not know of, or remember, him and thus did not name him when enumerating the children of Daniel of Pendleton District.
Some have said that Thomas was a doctor but nothing has been found to verify this statement. His appointment as a constable was entered on page 73 of Lincoln County, TN Court Records, 1810 - 1813. "Tuesday, 27th November 1810. Thomas Delany (notice spelling) appointed constable, took oath of office, and entered into Bond with Henry Brinker and William Moore his securities." Probably he was a farmer as well for he did own land and a constable's pay would not support a family.
Thomas was a captain of his company in the War of 1812. This was a company in the Second Regiment of Tennessee Militia commanded by Col. Leroy Hammonds. He enlisted on 20 September 1814 and appears on a muster roll 20 September 1814 at Fayetteville (county seat of Lincoln County). He is also on a roll dated at Nashville, 10 April 1815, the date his service expired. His pay of $266.66 plus subsistence of $81.20 entitled him to $347.86, for which he signed on 9 July 1815. The T in his signature is such that it looks like a Zhomas. The pension application of a private in his company, James Barbee, states that they "marched to Pensacola and participated in its capture, went to Mobile and deposited arms in Fort Charlotte, thence homeward."
Thomas owned 200 acres of land in Lincoln County, TN lying on the waters of Mulberry Creek. In two lawsuits of 9 February 1816 (Court Records, pages 311 and 312) Chapley R. Wilbourn plaintiff versus Thomas Delany, Defendant, the court ordered that the sheriff of Lincoln County expose to sale two hundred acres adjoining 1000 acres of land in the name of John Smith, where said Delany's family now lives, levied on as the property of the Defendant. However, a sale of this land is not recorded in the county between the years 1815 and 1830, according to a letter from Robert L. Whitsett, Register of Deeds, dated 7 December 1976.
Later in Jefferson County, AL Thomas Dulaney sold land but there is no deed to show how or when he acquired it. The land grant books in the Secretary of State's office in Montgomery show the tract granted to Mordecai Fuller. In Deed Book 2, pages 147 and 148 there is a deed from Thomas Dulaney to William Knox, dated 17 September5 1825 for $150.00 for 50 acres described as the south end of the west half of the northwest quarter of Section 3, in Township 16 of range one east in the District of Tuscaloosa descending as far north as a conditional line running through the plantation. Elies G. Cooke, Robert Martin and William (his mark) Pressley, recorded 13 March 1826 witnessed the deed. On page 178 of the same Rhode Dulaney, wife of Thomas Dulaney, relinquished to William Knox all her right of dower in said land, dated 18 May 1826 and filed the same day. However, in Deed Book 3, page 262 on 6 September 1827 Thomas Dulaney sold the same land for $225.00 to Benjamin Stovall of St. Clair County with Nicholas Talley, John Dulaney and Alford (spelling) Dulaney as witnesses. The deed was recorded 27 January 1829. No dower relinquishment.
Some biographical information on Thomas Dulaney was furnished by a grandson, the Reverend Thomas Dulany, to his son and written down. These notes read, "My father's father was Alfred Dulaney, born in AL in 1808. His father, my great grandfather Thomas Dulaney married Rhoda Thrasher in 1802, by whom he was the father of 5 children. Two girls, Elizabeth and Nancy, the former married a Carter, the latter a Sharp, and three sons John married Peggy Martin and Patton - Gilbert who first married Jensy Carter and then (page torn off here, but the top part of the letters on the next line still show, and spacing and dot over i make them agree with "Beckie Ewing" which marriage is found in the records) and Alfred Dulaney, my father's father married Rachel McNiece in 1828."
Though there is no marriage record for Thomas Dulaney and Rhoda Thrasher, the above statement with records in Franklin County, Georgia prove this marriage. Robert Thrasher, father of Rhoda, left a will dated 5 January 1797 and proved 4 February 1797 naming his wife Elizabeth and "and all my children". From court records these children have been determined to be Joseph, Thomas, Rhoda, Robert T., Elizabeth, Gilbert and Sarah or Sally. At the November 1811 term of court Elizabeth Thrasher gave up her one third right to Robert Thrasher's land and an order for sale was signed by the heirs. In Deed Book 777, page 73, the heirs signed as:
James Blair, guardian for Sary Thrasher
Joseph (his mark) Thrasher
Thomas Delaney, attorney in fact for Robt. Thrasher
Thos. Delaney, attorney in fact for Seth Hodge (Elizabeth)
Thomas Delany. Recorded 20th February 1813
Powers of attorney in connection with this estate show Thomas Dulaney was of Lincoln County, TN.
No church affiliation for Thomas has been found but according to The Steeple Beckons, a narrative history of the First Baptist Church, Trussville, AL 1821 - 1971 by Katherine Hale Hanlin; Rhoda Delaney was a member in 1823, at which time the name of the church was Cahawba Baptist Church.
Thomas Dulaney, born in SC, lived there for the first part of his life, even after his marriage for his first son John was born there in 1803. Sometime between then and 1808 he moved to Bedford County, TN and in 1809 Lincoln County was formed from Bedford and he was cut into Lincoln. On 30 August 1810 he and Joseph Thrasher and others were appointed to lay off a road from Garlands Mill to intersect the road leading from Shelbyville. For a number of years he was captain of Mulberry Company and his name appears when men were appointed to take a list of the taxable property. In 1815 he was a juror in the case of Gideon Hogg vs. Lemuel Pounders and again in the case of State of Tennessee vs. David Riggs. After 1816 his name disappears from the records and with the sheriff being ordered to sell his land, he probably moved away about that time.
Between 1816 and 1823 when his wife joined the church in Jefferson County, AL, it is not definitely known where Thomas and his family were. It is possible that he lived in Florida for a short time, his war services having acquainted him with the state. One census gives the birthplace as Florida for Elizabeth Carter, believed to be the daughter of Thomas. Also a grandson, Gilbert, gives FL as the birthplace of his father Alfred. Whether in FL or not, by 1823 Thomas and his family were in Jefferson County, AL. Some time between Thomas' death, which occurred 13 December 1829, his widow and children moved to Marion County, AL. There she is listed as Rody Dulaney between 40 and 50, 1 m 15-20, 1 f 10-15 and 1 f 5-10. Alongside her are her two married sons John and Alfred. In 1840 Itawamba County, MS census on page 144 there is Rody Dulaney 1 f 50-60 and 1 f 10-15. In 1850 Rhoda Dulana was living with her son Gilbert and is listed as 67 born SC on page 39, Princeton Township, Dallas County, Arkansas, near her brother Robert Thrasher. In 1860 Itawamba County, MS census, page 243, #1628, she was living with her son John, aged 76, born North Carolina.
Birthdates of Rhoda Dulaney and her three sons were written on the title page of a New Testament, which was located in the possession of a descendant, Charley Dulaney, living on the old Dulaney farm near Fulton, Itawamba County, MS.
