Joseph was a farmer. During the Civil War he was a Confederate Captain. Joseph and Rebecca moved to Texas with their children about 1868, but made a stop along the way in Hardeman County Tennessee where one of their children was born
The author (Young) refers to the Rufus K. Young story; he probably had children who lived in Hardeman County about 1868 and Joseph would have likely visited his cousins during the trip to Texas.
See Alfred Young for a letter from J.K. Street during the Civil War.

DR. JAMES F. McDOUGAL, physician and farmer, is a native of Lauderdale County, Ala., born July 16, 1820, son of Alexander and Eleanor (Garrick) McDougal, both of Scotch descent. The mother of Alexander was a Campbell, a very prominent family in Scotland. Our subject's mother was a descendant, on her mother's side, of the ancient and honored family of Fergusons. It will thus be seen that our subject is a lineal descendant of the most noted families of Scotland: The McDougals, Garricks, Fergusons and Campbells. The grandfather of our subject, Duncan McDougal, came to American and brought his family during the Revolutionary war. John McDougal was the only one old enough to take part in that struggle. He enlisted in the American Army and took an active part until the close of the war. John died in North Carolina and the other five removed West and settled first (1817) in Lauderdale County, Ala. Here Duncan died. The four brothers then removed to Lawrence County, where they lived and died. They all lie buried in the same cemetery, about three miles from Wayland Springs. Alexander (father of our subject), Samuel, Archibald and James, like their illustrious ancestors of the feudal times, delighted to clan together, and after their pilgrimage of earth was completed they were interred in the same church yard. Our subject grew to manhood on the farm, and when about twenty-two years of age began the study of medicine under the preceptorship of Dr. Edward Bumpus, of Lauderdale County, Ala. He first practiced in Mississippi, but soon removed to Lawrence County, where he successfully practiced his profession. In 1871 he removed to Hardin County, and here he now resides. Dr. McDougal was married, January, 1844, to Mary D. Carmack, of Mississippi, who died September 6, 1879. She was the mother of thirteen children, eight of whom are living: Alexander C. (a physician of Hardin County), Eleanor, Agnes (Mrs. Thomas E. Harvey), M. F. (Mrs. R. D. DeFord), John E., Patience A. C. (Mrs. D. W. Broyles), Capitola A., James T. and Daniel A. October 26, 1881, our subject married Martha A. Powers. He is one among the leading and prominent men of Hardin County, and is respected by all his acquaintances.
