Pillow, John Shows to own 244 acres of land and 1 slave

Since James Terry is shown in the 1840 census right after John Pillow and before Wm. Roberts (his sisters husband) and neither of the later men own property, could they somehow be related to John Pillow and living on his land?

From Lois Weaver:

Roberson Fork Church of Christ

The years covered were suppose to be 1830-1868, however there
was nothing  from 1858-1867 (only one entry for 1868).  Here are some of the things I found - In the membership list of Jul 1836 there is a John Terry and a Mary Wilkes - not married yet.   There's several Roberts and Doggetts, both of whom are in my database.  I found an entry that "Elizabeth Roberts left her father's home and went to live with John Williams in an unmarried state." There was a Jane Pigg on the 1841 list of members.  In 1844 Richard Williams was admonished for drinking.  In 1852 Willis Dodson and "companion" Martha
B. Dodson joined the church.  In Mar 1852 Samuel Williams joined.  In Feb 1848 John Terry was accused of drinking, but the "charges were not sustained".
In the 1850 list of members were John Terry, Samuel Williams, D. F.
Williams, Elizabeth Terry, Mary Williams, James D. Terry, Willis G. Dodson, W. L. Williams, Sarah C. Terry, Martha B. Dodson, L. C. Williams (Female).
Among the 1855 members listed were Martha A., Mary F., and Nancy J. Terry and Martha B. Dodson all of whom were baptized in Aug 1855.
I also found a William and Sarah Kennedy joined in Nov 1857.

Curtis Terry purchased land from Thos Hudson 1833

There is no land purchase for James Terry anywhere close to this time.

John F. Terry and it may have said John H. Purchased land from the Circuit Court in 1848

J.D. Terry and James Terry in 1860, 67, 68 and 79 SOLD land.

John H. Terry purchased land in 1851 and 1857 and I didn't search beyond this for him.

There is no record for James Terry making a purchase of land but several records of him selling land. So where did he get it? Is it possible that Curtis Terry was his father and he inherited the land? And then he sold it when he left Giles in 1879 to go to Alabama?
Curtis is the only purchaser of land under the name of Terry until John H. bought land in 1851, yet in 1836, James is paying taxes on land.

From "History of Rhea County, TN" page 124:
"Mayors of Dayton"  There is a list from 1885 thru 1889, and 1900 thru 1989, and this paragraph:(no Kennedy in the list)
"  The Minutes for 9 October 1899 read: "City Recorder Thomas reported that a fire on October 8, 1899, destroyed the Spivey Block in which was located the City Hall and that the City Records and furniture were totally destroyed." There is no record for the period 1890 to October 1899.
Based on the list of Mayors included in Campbell's Records of Rhea, the following men served as Mayor between 1890 and 1899: S.W. Swabey, R.D. Kennedy, and J.F. Johnson.  Since R.M. Sherman served four terms, he can also be included in this nine year period."

Corsicana, Texas - August 26 - The remains of W.E.
