Daniel is one of two Revolutionary War veterans in the family who survived long enough to apply for a pension. The other veteran was Michael Broyles, son of Jacob.

In those days the men were drafted for tours of a few months at a time, but were subject to being drafted multiple times. Since formal discharge papers were rare to begin with, and often lost, the applicants normally made verbal declarations detailing their experiences, and provided witnesses who could vouch for their character.

There are several versions of Daniel's birthdate. [5] gives the year 1760, [78] gives the year 1761, [1] gives 1 May 1762, and [79] gives the above date.

See also, Daniel, son of Nicholas, for additional records that may refer to this Daniel.

Daniel's children are given by [1] without any indication of the source of the information. [79] states that his wife's name is Mary.

6 Mar 1777 - He enlisted in Capt. Michael Bowyer's Co. of the 12th Virginia regiment, as a private. [1] It is interesting that this tour was not mentioned in his declaration for pension.

Apr 1778 - He was on the company muster roll at Valley Forge, "sick in some hospital". [1]

Nov 1780 - He was drafted for three months. He was a private under Col. Barbour, Maj. Roebuck, Capt. Tolls. "The troops were marched to Richmond, where General Nelson discharged them, because he had more troops than he could then find provisions for. They were not engaged more than 2 months in this tour." [78]

Jan 1781 - Daniel was a member of class #76, liable for military service, but not drafted. [80] The class was the lottery group that men were put into for determining the draft.

Feb 1781 - He was drafted for three months under Col. Hill, Capt. Rice. [78]

26 Apr 1781 - Daniel was in a battle near Petersburg, VA. [78]

May 1781 - Daniel's party "marched to Shirley Hundred (Plantation), and there ran some of the enemies forces from their ships into an ambush formed by concealing our troops in the bottom of some boats moored at the shore, in which there were one hundred of the enemy killed, and 11 taken prisoners. At the same time there was captured a vessel the name not recollected, which declarant understood was sold for the benefit of the captors, but declarant never received any part of the prize." [78]

c. 1781 - He left Virginia about this time, bound for Tennessee. [78]

6 Aug 1790 - Daniel buys land from his father. This is probably his own first home. 110 acres on the west side of Little Limestone in Washington Co., TN., part of a grant of Joseph Buller. wit: Samuel Broyles, Abraham Broyles, and Solomon Yeager. [1]:33

6 Aug 1790 - Daniel Broyle witnesses the sale of 240 acres from his father Syrus Broyls to Daniel's brother Samuel, on the Little Limestone. [1]:33

1793...1801 - Daniel is taxed for 110 acres in Washington Co. [56]

12 Sep 1797 - Daniel Broyles witnesses a sale from his father Cyrus to his Daniel's brother Tobias Broyls. [1]:33

17 Sep 1797 - Daniel and his brother Tobias witness the sale of Nicholas to son Abraham, on the Little Limestone. [1]:31

17 Feb 1799 - Daniel Broyles is a witness to the will of Jiles Brooks in Washington Co., TN. Probated in May 1799. [81] However, [8] gives the name of the witness as Daniel Bayles.

23 Mar 1800 - Daniel Broyles witnesses a sale from Adonijah Morgan to Adam Broyles. Greene Co., Tenn. [1]:63

30 Jun 1809 - Daniel sells land which he purchased from his father on 6 Aug 1790. [1]

1814 - Daniel is not found on the Washington Co. tax lists. [47]

1820 -  Daniel Broils is found in the White Co., TN Census

5 Sep 1832 - Daniel Broyle applies for a Revolutionary War pension. He states that he "does not know of any person except one Solomon Yager, who resides many miles from him in West Tennessee, who could prove the facts stated in the above declaration." Witnessed by Abraham Slover and Gilbert Cruze. McMinn Co., TN. Daniel signs his own name!! [78]

18 Oct 1833 - He receives $23.33 per year pension. [78]

1 Jun 1840 - Daniel Broyles is 80 years old and living with his son Cornelius in Rhea Co., Tenn. The fact that his age is given is unusual. This was part of a special census of Revolutionary War veterans that was conducted along with the regular census.

James WORKS [Parents] 1 was born 1756 in York Co., PA. He died 1 Dec 1812 in Milledgeville, GA. James married Penelope TOOL.

JAMES E. WORKS
PENELOPE TOOL

Thomas Spratlin Porter remembers the following about his ancestors --
as they were told him by his Grandmother, Mary Jane Ogletree Thomas and
her sister, Sarah Elizabeth Ogletree Pinson. This history was related to
Ruth Conaway Kendrick in April 1966. The red or brown hair that showed
up in the later generations was inherited from the Works side of the family.

Sally Goggans Hughes Porter remembers that the Works family came to
America from Orkney Islands off the northern coast of Scotland.

Ruth Conaway Kendrick says in a letter that one lady she was
corresponding with in South Carolina (a Peterson descendant) told her of
having a rocking chair brought by wagon from Pennsylvania to South
Carolina when her family moved. The Works family apparently came
from Pennsylvania through Virginia to South Carolina.

James Works was listed in a Revolutionary War size roll about 1780.
He was cited as being of York County, Pennsylvania, and would have been
born about 1756. He enrolled at Chesterfield Courthouse, Virginia. He did not like being in the Revolutionary War and traded his "rum rations" to another man to take his place in the Rev. War. He had sandy hair, blue eyes and was listed as being a tailor by trade--later records in Orangeburg District, SC list him as being a surveyor by trade--Plat Locators, Old Book B dated 22 Feb. 1792. 1793 and 1796 Tax Records of Hancock County, Georgia list James Works. 1805 Land Lottery records for Washington County, GA list James Works as having two draws--no land received. James Works is listed on Washington County, GA Milita Muster Rolls, 2nd Co., 2nd Batt., 2nd Regiment, 1793. From 1811 Georgia Tax Digest we learn James Works owned 346 acres of land in Baldwin County, GA. He died 1 Dec. 1812.

South Carolina Archives, Records of the Register and Secretary of the Province list Robert Works as witness to a deed dated 18 Feb. 1679. No connection has been established.

FOURTH SERIES VOL I, HISTORICAL AND GENEALOGICAL NOTES

Work bought land in Pennsylvania in 1760 & with a brother moved to
Virginia and they were officers in the Revolutionary army from that State.

established.
