What is a little ironic or possibly done on purpose is that Tom and Harriet named their first child Jessie and their second child James. Jesse James was a very good friend of the family as noted under the history of Harriet's father and brother.

Harriett M. HEASLET [Parents] [scrapbook] was born 13 Jun 1860 in AL. She died 1 18 Jun 1925 in Woodville, Marshall Co., OK and was buried in Woodville Cemetery, Marshall Co., OK. Harriett married 2 Thomas C. COLEY about 1881 in Probably Scott Co. AR.

MANY of the Coley family members refuse to believe that Harriett Heaslet came from a family of "outlaws". I suppose it tarnishes their family history and embarrasses them. I, on the other hand think that history like this makes the stories and family history more exciting.
I feel that I have proven beyond a reasonable doubt that this is Harriet's family.
Harriet's death certificate lists her father as Marion Haslett which is how the Heaslet name is pronounced. And it lists her mothers name as Mary Rodgers. The Scott County, AR probate record (see James Heaslet) lists Harriett Coley as a daughter and his wife as Mary. The Linn Flat Raid is well documented in MANY old history books including the History of Nacogdoches, TX and includes Harriett's brother Columbus Hazlett.
In addition, we have the oral history of Lee Allbright's mother Bonnie to tell the story as she knew it. Bonnie's father was Ulysses Grant Heaslet, the brother of Harriet and he didn't die until 1938, so the story must have been fairly accurate.
Also, Thomas and Harriett's son William Roger Coley's WWI Draft Registration states that he was born in Mansfield, Sebastian Co. AR.
If you are descended from Harriet Heaslet or Thomas Coley and you have proof that this history is inaccurate, please send me absolute proof. Otherwise, please accept the legal documents obtained from courthouses and written history in old history books as the truth.

See story of Harriets brother Columbus for the incident where Harriett was poisoned and near killed.

Scott County AR Land Records:

HEASLET          HARRIETT       M          11       1N        31W         80     1885/04/15
HEASLET          JAMES          M          11       1N        31W         0     1885/04/27
Due to the tremendous amount of land sold in the 1800's, the General Land Office experienced quite a backlog in the middle part of the 19th century. It was not unusual for several years to pass between the time an individual purchased land from the local land office and the time a patent for that tract was finally signed by the GLO in Washington, D.C.

The name is pronounced Hazlet

WORKS.

I received an e mail from Ellen through ancestry.com with no return e mail address and she said:

I I have a book on Navigation and Astronomy that was printed in London in 1736. In the front piece of the book, a number of people who owned the book put their names. The first is James Works, 1739. Next, James A. Goggins, M.D. put a note that he got the book from his grandfather, John Works. The next Works in line is James, but he was not born in 1739. Could it be that James Works b. 1756 had a father with the same name? Apparently no one has been able to trace back to James Works, 1739? If he had a book on this subject, maybe he emigrated to the US from England? This is very interesting to me because of the book!
Thank you,

Ellen
